Sanchez gets dirty
~~~
The guy in charge in Iraq just after Baghdad fell, and just before Paul Bremer took over, has a new book. He's Lt. General (Ret.) Ricardo Sanchez, and he seems quite a little bit upset. In the excerpt released to Time, he documents a meeting with then Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld wherein he was told he wouldn't ever be a 4-star, vaguely promised a cushy gig after retirement, and asked to back up Rummy's assertion that he was completely unaware that much of our troop forces had just left Iraq. Sanchez says he declined to endorse. Sanchez is now a private citizen.
"In the meantime, hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars were unnecessarily spent, and worse yet, too many of our most precious military resource, our American soldiers, were unnecessarily wounded, maimed, and killed as a result. In my mind, this action by the Bush administration amounts to gross incompetence and dereliction of duty."
- Lt. Gen. Sanchez
Time has the 3 page excerpt HERE. The book drops May 6th.
