Colby Buzzell

Colby Buzzell is a guy who lives outside of San Francisco. He's in his early thirties. Back in 2003, he joined the Army. Infantry. He signed up to get away from the crap jobs he couldn't hold, the dull and uncertain life he was leading. He wanted to go to Iraq or Afghanistan - where the action was. He wanted to kill terrorists. When he came home, he wrote an unblinking, unapologetic book about his experiences. It's called "My War: Killing Time in Iraq", and it will make you proud and ashamed. You'll laugh as you feel the anger build. If Huck Finn were an infantryman, he might have written My War.

A month ago, three years after coming home, Colby got a letter in his mailbox, marked URGENT. The letter says he's to drop out of the photography classes he's taking and tell his wife, friends, and employer that he's leaving to do another 15 months in Iraq. Imagine if you got that letter. A natural journalist, he wrote an op-ed to his local paper. I urge you to take a moment and read what he has to say. He's not some whiny liberal blogger. He's killed people. Now, no matter how he feels about it, he going to go kill some more.



Thursday, June 24, 2004 Three Loud Explosions

I can hear small arms fire right now coming from outside the wire as I write this entry. On my way to the internet cafe that they have set up for us on this FOB (Forward Operating Base) I heard three loud explosions, about 5 minutes apart, followed by some breif small arms fire. We have cement mortar bunkers set up for us all over this FOB for us to seek cover in during an attack. From a cement shelter I observed three very large dust mushroom clouds from right outside the wire from where the explosions took place. You could feel the concusion of the explosions from where I was standing. No word yet what just happened. The craziness begins...
